Gorrosive sublimate: bichloride of mercury. "When does mercury freeze? At 39 or 40 below zero. When does it boil and form an invisible elastic vapour? At 656. 9. Platinum. Give a notion of Platinum? Pure platinum resembles silver, but is not so white: it is malleable and ductile: it is not melted by any furnace heat: nor attacked by any of the pure acids: it is the heaviest of known metals: it undergoes no change from the combined agency of air and moisture. 10. Palladium. Give a notion of Palladium. It resembles platinum in colour and lustre, it is ductile, malleable, considerably harder than platinum. It is used by dentists in plates, as a substitute for gold. We may here observe that Paladium, Rhodium, Osmium, and Iridium are all contained in the ore of platinum, and have hitherto been procured in very small quantity. 11. Nickel. Give a notion of Nickel. This metal is rather rare: it occurs chiefly in combination with arsenic, and associated with iron and cobalt. It is nearly silver white, but has a tinge of grey. It has a high lustre; is hard and malleable. It is very infusible; decidedly magnetic: magnetic needles may be made of it which do not rust. It is much used in the manufacture of German silver, or argentan, which is an alloy of copper, zinc, and nickel. 12. Cadmium. Give a notion of Cadmium. This metal is, in all its relations, very analogous to zinc, and is almost invariably found associated with it. It is in its appearance similar to tin, but is harder and more tenacious.
